What is hijama?

A traditional form of cupping therapy

Hijama usually refers to wet cupping: cups create suction on the skin and small superficial incisions are made under controlled hygienic conditions. Dry and fire cupping use suction without incisions.

People seek cupping for many personal wellbeing reasons, but responses vary. It is not a replacement for diagnosis, medical treatment or urgent care. We discuss suitability before treatment and may advise you to speak with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Potential benefits & expectations

A calm, transparent appointment

Some people report temporary relaxation or relief from muscular tightness after cupping, while others may notice little change. Evidence varies by condition, so we avoid promises and discuss realistic expectations.

  1. Before: eat normally, hydrate, and tell us about anything relevant to treatment safety.
  2. During: we explain the chosen method, obtain consent, and maintain appropriate hygiene.
  3. After: temporary circular marks, tenderness or light-headedness can occur. You receive practical aftercare guidance.

Safety comes before treatment

Wet cupping breaks the skin and requires careful infection-control procedures. Fire cupping uses heat and has a burn risk if performed incorrectly. Treatment may be unsuitable with some medicines, skin conditions, bleeding risks, pregnancy-related circumstances or acute illness.

Please seek professional advice if you are unsure. Call 999 or use NHS urgent services for an emergency; do not use a booking form for urgent medical help.
